Chess Sets
The world of chess is exciting and fun. Daring moves with unique game pieces are an ancient past time that people of all ages continue to enjoy today. Chess is a game of strategy and tactics.
History
According to many historians, chess is the oldest game of skill on
earth today. The oldest recorded reference to the game was dated before 600
AD. There are some unverified claims that it actually dates back to 100 AD.
The game began in Persia. Early traders passing through Persia took chess sets
back with them and consequently chess, or versions of it, exist in almost every
country in the world. By 1400 AD it was a popular game in Europe, and the names
and ranks of the pieces were changed to represent the way people lived during
that time. Those names and ranks are still being used today.
Pieces
The Europeans fell in love with the game and subsequently chess
pieces were renamed to represent medieval times. The eight pawns represent
the laborers or serfs, who in real life were considered to be the property of
the wealthy landowners. Laborers were traded during battles or used as diversions
in order to protect the landowner.
Chess sets come with two knights. In medieval times, a knight was a professional
solider. In chess sets, the knight is higher than the pawn but its duty is still
to protect those of higher rank. Like the pawn they are often sacrificed to
save the other pieces.
The rook, sometimes called castle pieces, provide a place of refuge just as
a castle would do in ancient times.
The bishops represent the church. In medival times, the clergy was an important
public figure and were protected by the rest of the citizens. Finally the two
remaining pieces in a set are the queen and the king. In the game of chess the
Queen is the most powerful player. During times of kingdoms it was often the
queen that exerted great influence on the king and often was the source of policy
and law. History shows examples of queens who undermined the king and actually
held more power than he did. In chess, like in real life, the king should be
protected at all costs. If the king falls, so does the kingdom - or in the case
of chess, the game ends. At all times the king must be defended and kept safe.
Even though the king isn't the most powerful piece he is the most important. Types of Sets
