Chess Boards
A chess board, like any playing surface, is very important. If the surface conditions are not right, the game may be affected. Perhaps the most important functional aspect of the chess board is its physical compatibility with the pieces. Beyond this, you’ll surely want to choose a board that visually suits the pieces. You should also consider where the board will be displayed, and how it will be used.
Proportion
The easiest way to physically fit pieces to a chess board is to try them on, like you try on clothing. Immediately you will know if they fit or not. To be a bit more precise, the width of the king piece’s base should be no more than about 80 percent of the width of a chess board square. If the pieces are too large for the board, navigating them around each other will be difficult. If they are too small, no matter how their style coordinates with the board, the set won’t look right.
Aesthetics
Matching the board and pieces together aesthetically can be simple. For boards made from wood, make sure the dark pieces compliment the board’s dark wood. Together, the set should match or elegantly contrast the wood of the table on which it will be displayed. Some chess boards are finished with a glass overlay. This protects the boards made from softer wood, and add a dramatic shine. Should you prefer a neutral or dull finish, you’ll obviously avoid the glass overlay.
Themed Boards
Themed boards match the board to the pieces using a common theme. Themed boards and pieces are generally sold as a set to make the match automatic.
Use
Many elegant boards are displayed almost exclusively to add sophistication to a room. Others like travel sets are small, compact and durable for portability.
Chess boards are the foundation of a highly personalized collection—one to display proudly for years to come. They not only add to the decor of any room in your home, they also provide a game of strategy and fun for people of all ages. |
