Chess Pieces
Finding the right chess pieces can really enhance the whole playing experience! They are often the first choice people make when buying chess sets; then they find the board that complements their choice. The look of the pieces is just one aspect to think about. Note the craftsmanship of the pieces. Also, simply consider how the set will be used.
Wood, Plastic and other Materials
Hard plastic is by far the most popular material used and is known for its invulnerability to breaking, chipping, or moisture damage. You’ll also find many pieces formed from wood. Rosewood is a popular wood for making dark pieces because it does not easily chip. Boxwood has a light yellowish hue which makes it a perfect wood for light-colored pieces. Boxwood also accepts staining well and, therefore, can be used to make pieces of all colors. Ebony is resistant to decay making it a very time-honored material. However, ebony can also be expensive and brittle in nature. Additional materials used in piece construction include marble, crystal, and a variety of different metals.
The Knight and the King
Considering craftsmanship, look particularly at the knight pieces, and the crown on the king pieces. They often exhibit the most skilled, intricate carving, and therefore represent a high percentage of the set’s value in general.
Use of the Chess Set
Ebony and crystal make for breathtakingly beautiful pieces. With heirloom quality, such pieces play an important part in setting the style of a study or den. But these materials are not the best choice for a set to be used daily, especially by young players, or for carrying to tournaments. For this purpose, you might choose durable, weighted plastic. If chess pieces are to be used for tournament play, check with your organization for regulations. Avid players will also want to be sure their pieces are smooth and evenly weighted, as any awkwardness will be distracting.
Remember that a quality set of chess pieces will become a treasured heirloom. They can hold treasured memories, as well as triumphs, for a lifetime. |
